September 2016 MEMBER OF THE MONTH!

This month all staff at Integrated Martial Arts elected Khiem Lam as IMA Member of the Month! Khiem has been with us for over a year and is one of our more advanced Muay Thai students! He is consistently on the mats week in and week out and is a great example for new and more experienced students.DSC04079Tell us a little about yourself…

My martial arts experience began with Kung-Fu. I was always a big fan of fighting portrayed in media. This led to me becoming a big fan of boxing and watching my favorite fighter, Manny Pacquiao. Eventually, I discovered MMA as it became more popular. MMA and boxing are the only sports that really interests me to this day. I can’t talk to anyone about Football or basketball but I can talk about the recent fights that happened in UFC.

I was very a inactive person until my friends introduced me to CrossFit. This eventually led me to discover IMA on groupon when I was looking for an alternate means of exercise on the side. I figured I’d try Muay Thai since my cousins were doing it for a number of years and raving about how fun it is. Just after a couple sessions, I knew it was something I could stick with and benefit me in real life situations. Outside my training life at IMA, my interests are Street Fighter, films, gaming, and lots of music.
How loDSC03951ng have you been studying Jiu-Jitsu / Muay Thai?
I have studied Muay Thai just over a year with Luis Rodriguez and Mark Dellagrotte. I’ll eventually try Jiu-Jitsu……maybe.
Why would you refer a friend or family member to IMA?
I’d refer a family member or friend to IMA for top quality training and instructors that are involved. Just the whole community at IMA is great and very welcoming.
What is your favorite part about studying at IMA?
The secret Krav Maga technique from Luis.

Jonathan getting his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt from Luis Rodriguez

We are happy to name Jonathan Charles as Integrated Martial Arts’ member of the month! Jonathan has been with us for over a year and is a consistent presence in all of the different classes including Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA! He was also recently awarded his blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!

Tell us a little about yourself…

I took karate as a child but I remember at a young age taking a strong interest in boxing after seeing Mike Tyson on tv. I saw it being a more effective means of self defense in the streets. I also remember always wanting to try Jiu Jitsu as a kid but there was no place around to take it. As I got older and MMA became more popular I realized this is the true means of self defense. I began watching around the early days off Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture and quickly became obsessed. For most people it’s football ,baseball ,or basketball for me it’s MMA and more specifically JIU JITSU! So eventually I met a fighter who told me to come down to the gym and check it out. That was tens years ago and ever since then I’ve been training off and on. The last year and a half I have decided to get serious with my training and I have come a long way under the coaching of Luis Rodriguez.

How long have you been studying Jiu-Jitsu / Muay Thai?

Every effective aspect of my Jiu Jitsu/MMA game has been established over the last year and half training under Luis Rodriguez before that I was just learning some basic skills.

What are the benefits you have received from training at IMA?

Since training at IMA I feel confident , dangerous 😉 , and at peace with myself.

Why would you refer a friend or family member to IMA?

First and foremost I would recommend a friend to IMA because of the atmosphere .  The benefits of Martial Arts Training alone are great but I really enjoy the family atmosphere.  There have been days when my body has been aching from my elbows to my knees and I tell myself I should take the night off.  Then I tell myself that my team is going to be there and if I can be at least 60-70% I could help someone else get better.  Knowing that I can help one of my teammates get better even if I am not 100%  gets me amped up to train. I would refer anyone looking for an effective way to defend themselves or as a great way to get in shape , be happy, and healthy. IMA is a great place to train safely and learn effective techniques.

What is your favorite part about studying at IMA?

I Have to say my favorite part of studying at IMA is the effectiveness of Instructor Luis Rodriguez. My skills have come along way under his coaching . I personally see the improvements and I constantly receive positive feedback from others who see it as well.

I love MMA and plan of training for the rest of my life. I think everyone can benefit from training MMA I also think everyone should know how to defend themselves.

Tell us a little about yourself…

I spent most of childhood in Framingham MA and only 2 years ago I moved to Westborough with my family.  During the past 10 years not including this year at IMA I spent most of my available time weightlifting when I wasn’t with my family or at work.  I started to get bored with the lifting things up and putting things down so after driving past IMA a zillion times I finally decided to check it out.  The main reason I decided to check it out was because I am a huge fan of Martial Arts.  Practicing Martial Arts has always been a dream of mine and it was something I told myself I would try it when I finally got in a position in life where I could not just do it but give it the focus and dedication it deserves.

How long have you been studying Jiu-Jitsu / Muay Thai?

Since signing up I have been training in Muay Thai for 10 months and Jiu Jitsu for 9 months with some additional training in Self Defense and MMA.

What are the benefits you have received from training at IMA?

Since training at IMA I have become more humble and confident.  In addition I become more relaxed and able to handle work or personal issues in more controlled way.

My favorite part of training in IMA is the variety of Martial Art Techniques offered from different practices such as Judo, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Self defense, and MMA. It has been an great experiance training and learning with everyone at IMA!

June 2016 MEMBER OF THE MONTH!

Alan helping a new student in a Muay Thai class.

We are happy to name Alan Cheng as Integrated Martial Arts’ member of the month! Alan embodies everything we are trying to accomplish at IMA. He trains in multiple disciplines (including Brazilain Jiu-Jitsu), is always there to help a team member, and is always a positive presence on the mat. Alan is always a great learner and helper in every martial arts class he attends.

Tell us a little about yourself…

My name is Alan Cheng and I am an alumni of Northeastern University. I work as a physical therapist around the corner from IMA/CFP at Accelerated Strength and Balance where I help patients heal, recover, and achieve their functional goals. On my days away from IMA, I rock climb and pretend to be a ninja at Central Rock Gym-Worcester. I love eating and cooking, as well as just generally making people laugh.

How long have you been studying Jiu-Jitsu / Muay Thai?

I’ve been training martial arts, in particular BJJ and Muay Thai, since the summer of 2007. I started training in New Jersey at Modern Martial Arts with Sensei John Potenza, then at Weapons 9 with Chris Tran. I then trained at Northeastern University with Craig Grenier who is an assistant instructor at Boston Muay Thai Academy. When I moved down to North Carolina, I trained with Chris Clodfelter at Eight Points Muay Thai, as well as BJJ with professor Rick Screeton at Carlson Gracie Team-Winston Salem.

What are the benefits you have received from training at IMA?

Personally, training at IMA has given me a great stress reliever. I typically work >50 hours a week, but I have noticed that if I make it to training 2-3x/week, then I am much happier even though I am working long hours. IMA is my happy place.

Why would you refer a friend or family member to IMA?

Alan and Luis in the NoGi Jiu Jitsu class

IMA is a great facility to train in. It is safe, meticulously cleaned, and the instructors provide excellent direction. The great part of the IMA family is just that; we’re a family. We don’t have any cliques or anyone who thinks they are better than the team. The professional fighters train with the amateurs and beginners, and there is not ego on our mats.

Another reason why I’d refer a friend or family member to IMA is that we all respect everyone who walks through the doors and onto the mats because we all remember just how nervous and excited we were the first time we walked into a new gym or school, and we remember how awesome we felt after our first class/workout. It takes guts to start your journey in martial arts, but we all stuck around because of how awesome it makes us feel. I can confidently say that if you are looking for a place to try out martial arts or a team to join, you can’t find a better place than IMA. The team is super inviting, and very anti-drama.

What is your favorite part about studying at?

My favorite part about studying at IMA are the people I get to train with. My teammates have become my friends, and we all support each other in our goals, whether they are athletic or personal. I can’t stress this enough though, there are NO CLIQUES at IMA. I’ve seen ‘inner circle’ groups destroy academies in the past because of petty squabbles, and this place has none of that. It is a great environment to be involved with, and the people here have outstanding character.

Tell us a little about yourself…

I am finishing up my undergraduate degree in History and Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. For fun, I like to hang out with my family or go to heavy metal concerts. Much of my free time in the last year has been spent at IMA!

How long have you been studying Jiu-Jitsu / Muay Thai?

I’ve been attending Jiu-Jitsu classes at IMA for about eight months at this point. I started training at IMA in July on the referral of my friend Danielle who works at CrossFit Prototype.

What are the benefits you have received from training at IMA?

I have lost almost thirty pounds, made friends, and become more focused and confident. It is also an amazing way to focus and decompress for a couple of hours. It has absolutely changed my life for the better.

What is your favorite part about studying at IMA?”
My favorite thing is training with my coaches. I feel remarkably lucky to train with an absolute titan like Luis Rodriguez.
